A Black Bedroom

Sometimes when you walk into a room you get an immediate hit of emotion. That's exactly what happened when I entered this space and the emotion can only be described as, "wow." Even more impressive, keep in mind that this is not a real house. It was part of the Spring 2007 Show House, an event staged twice a year at the Washington Design Center. The room was part of a show called "A Summer House," the room was called "Sleek Summer Suite," and the designer is
Kelley Proxmire.
I talked to her for awhile about the space during the press preview party and I became even more impressed when she told me that room was conceived for a man. Yeah.

To prove her point she pulled me around and showed me the small television monitor hidden inside the canopy bed. See? She was thinking of us guys, there's already a TV in there. If you were to tell somebody you were going to paint the walls of your bedroom black, I'm sure you'd shock most people. The trick Kelley pulled off here is balancing all that black with other colors and textures. Here you can see the neutral floor covering, the luxurious gold dust ruffle with back piping and the inside of the canopy which is lined in an off-white.
In the sitting area, the black walls are contrasted with the white club chairs, the white fireplace, white wall hangings, and a splash of color represented by the coral arrangement. The attention to fine detail extends to the black trim on the chairs - just enough to make the space is irresistible. The black and white juxtaposition keeps happening in the shot below. Notice the white table lamps, then the black reading lamps inside the canopy. There's black end tables, a neutral headboard, black pillows, neutral drapes and a back framed round mirror.
All and all a pretty stunning space, isn't it? It's masculine without being macho, and contemporary without being too shiny. The black and gold make you think deco but the look is classic and timeless. So go ahead and shock your friends, order the black paint and take a chance. It could end up looking just as fabulous as this, Black Bedroom.
