Colonial Revival Interior Design
Revived

The architecture and interior design of this Colonial Revival home is actually new construction but no expense was spared to give it an authentic, "new-old house" feel. Oak floors are finished in a natural stain imbuing the space with warmth. Living room furniture is over-stuffed and softened further with swags and purposely mismatched pillows. The coffee table is already distressed so no worries about water rings. The fireplace is dry-stacked stone for a totally rustic look. The coffered ceiling shelters a room designed for comfort, the TV blends in by being placed in a period armoire. The wood grated entryway to the kitchen imparts an ad-hoc look, like the room was accented with leftover parts from other projects. This shabby-chic approach is brought home through the use hand picked period style
furnishings.

The kitchen in the same house provides an excellent example of the "unfitted" approach. The floor is a naturally finished hardwood but cabinetry veers from pickled, to natural to a dark, natural stain. The bead board under the bar area is painted not one but two different colors to make the counter look like it was added onto at some point. Countertops vary from white Carrera marble, always a gutsy choice in the kitchen due to how easily it stains, to a neutral granite. The material mash-up continues with a checked tile back splash, a massive hood done in copper and a bead board ceiling. With the emphasis on making the new look old, this kind of technique works great in any traditional design scheme.

More icing on the the Colonial Revival cake is a two-story stair well that picks up on the dry stacked fireplace in the living room. Grout holds the stone in place on the back where it can't be seen, eliminating visible lines on the front. Once again, naturally stained wood is used - this time as a stair railing, risers, and treads. Another old looking material, black steel, is applied as part of the railing and a period style light fixture completes the space. If
